I MUST CONFESS … I don’t really remember the first time I visited the Redlands. I grew up on the other side of Brisbane and only moved here when I married a Redlands boy, but long before that, I’d visited this fair city (or shire as it was then) at least three times …
Octoberfest at Thornlands
When I was in Grade 8, my high school German class went on an excursion to Octoberfest and it was held in this place called “Thornlands”. I’d never heard of it before.
It was lots of fun – heaps of stalls, a big tent with entertainment, lots of activity and beer (not that we had any!).
Oh and the hot goss was that Arlene B pashed some random dude out the back …
Several years later the event moved to the RNA Showgrounds. I still have no idea WHERE in Thornlands Octoberfest was held. Can anybody enlighten me?!
Wellington Point Jetty
I also remember my father taking my siblings and I to Wellington Point one hot summer Saturday (it was an access visit after my folks divorced), and watching heaps of kids jumping off the jetty into the water. It was so hot I was just longing to jump in with them, clothes and all!
Another place we visited with my Dad was Coochiemudlo Island. In those days we used to hire bikes and ride around for hours. We must have had endless energy!
So there you have it, my earliest memories of Redlands – circa 1979/1980.
How about you – what are your earliest memories of the Redlands?
